Kristof Serrand makes a surprise visit to Atelier de Sèvres
A big name in the world of animation, Kristof Serrand took advantage of his trip to Paris for the promotion of How to Train Your Dragon 3 to visit the animation degree students.
An animation star
A real animation star, his career is so impressive it’s enough to make your head spin. Kristof Serrand has worked on films like Shark Tail, The Croods and the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy.
However, Kristof Serrand did not always want to be an animator. His dream was to become a comic book illustrator. He took the Art Deco competitive entrance exam several times, failing each time: "The only real competition is that of the turn of events," adds Kristof Serrand.
He finally chose to attend Gobelins school where he discovered animation. With a touch of nostalgia, he remembers: "The first time I saw my image move, it was magic".
A moment of discussion and advice
In 20 years of his career, Kristof Serrand has always refused to make films. "It's rewarding, but it's a scam," jokes the host, adding: “What I love doing is animation; I like doing things myself."
In front of attentive animation degree course students, Kristof Serrand explains the importance of being "creative and sincere", and of putting "movement before drawing." According to the animator, while you must have a very good level of drawing in this area, "you must not have style".
