Animation Foundation Course: what classes are taught at Atelier de Sèvres?
The Animation Foundation at Atelier de Sèvres offers its students a complete range of classes and individual guidance throughout the year.
The structure of the course is centred on different objectives such as the development of Animation and creativity skills, creating a portfolio and preparing for the entrance exams to the top animation schools.
Michaël Bataille, animation techniques teacher at Atelier de Sèvres, explains the Animation Foundation course in detail.
The drawing branch
At Atelier de Sèvres, the year is centered on two branches: the drawing branch and the animation branch, which complement each other and are essential to learning this discipline in depth.
As an Animation Foundation student, you will begin by attending the various classes of the drawing branch: observational drawing, life drawing, perspective, comics and illustration.
These classes are essential for anyone who wants to flourish in the world of animation. At Atelier de Sèvres, students develop technical skills while sharpening their perception of reality through extensive observation work supervised by Animation Foundation teachers. The expression of movement requires work in stages and time to acquire the necessary technical skills.
The Animation branch
Once they have a good command of the techniques for drawing with movement and expression, Atelier de Sèvres students are immersed in the practice of Animation. During this phase of the Animation Foundation, we encourage intensive practice in the different methods studied.
The classes of the Animation branch taught at Atelier de Sèvres also include: storyboarding, character and background design, narration, 2-D animation and stop motion techniques, history of art, cinema and animated film and computer graphics (Photoshop/After Effects/TV Paint/Dragon Frame/Premiere).
"Animation brings together all of the arts: scriptwriting, drawing with the creation of graphic universes, characters and sets, staging with storyboarding, rhythm, timing, comedy, mime for animation and music. All these stages are taught at Atelier de Sèvres by professionals who, for the most part, work in prestigious animation studios. Students participate in workshops to learn teamwork, to put together a project and to present it to a judging panel. It is all very formative.” –
Michael Bataille
These different classes all serve to support Animation Foundation students in developing the portfolio that they will present to the top Animation schools during the entrance exams.

Portfolio
Throughout the year, each Animation Foundation student is supported by a teacher to create and develop their portfolio. This portfolio plays a key role in each art student’s career, as it is representative of their work.
If well structured, it should be able to inform viewers of your inspirations, your artistic knowledge and techniques, your ability to carry out a project, etc. Your ability to discuss the content of your portfolio will also be reviewed during the art school admissions interview.
Portfolios are not usually subject to specific requirements, but some schools ask, for example, for video clips so you must ensure you are aware of each school’s requirements.
Preparation for the entrance exams for the major schools
The aim at Atelier de Sèvres is to give all Animation Foundation students the opportunity to be accepted at the major Animation school of their choice at the end of the year. To do this, in addition to the theoretical and practical skills in various Animation techniques, students at Atelier de Sèvres must take mock written and oral exams in exam conditions.
These are essential in order for students to be prepared to take the competitive exams and optimise their chances of succeeding.
