Animation Foundation: why choose Atelier de Sèvres?

Atelier de Sèvres offers an intensive animation foundation over the course of one year preparing students for the competitive exams for the top Animation schools.

What are the advantages of the Animation Foundation at Atelier de Sèvres? The range of classes it offers, the quality of support, in part by Animation professionals, and the solid preparation for the entrance exams (written and oral) to the most prestigious Animation schools.

With an impressive success rate and guaranteed professional integration, Atelier de Sèvres is one of the most in-demand Animation Foundation courses in France. Catherine Totems, narrative teacher and head of the animation foundation and animation degree course at Atelier de Sèvres, explains the course structure/timetable, the advantages and the working environment at Atelier de Sèvres.

The Animation Foundation at Atelier de Sèvres: course structure

At Atelier de Sèvres, the Animation Foundation centres on two complementary branches: drawing and animation. The programme timetable is therefore structured around different classes, all of which are necessary to further our students’ artistic knowledge and technical skills.

The drawing branch includes observational drawing, life drawing, perspective, comics and illustration. These classes provide Animation Foundation students with solid methodical bases that are accompanied by intensive practice throughout the year.

The animation branch includes 2-D animation and stop motion techniques, storyboarding, history of art, cinema and animated film, narration and computer graphics.

These lessons are complemented by presentations given by Animation professionals throughout the year, during workshops and conferences where everyone will have the opportunity for discussion and creation, and also to think about their future profession in more detail.

"At Atelier de Sèvres, we make animated films even on the foundation course, with the required equipment, using digital 2-D or traditional video cameras, in all techniques (painting, sand animation, drawing, cutout, stop motion), with a sound studio available. We support our students’ individuality, their approaches and their creativity as well as technical, drawing and artistic skills." –Catherine Totems

The advantages of Atelier de Sèvres: preparing for the competitive exams for the top Animation schools and creating a portfolio

Students on the Animation Foundation don’t just benefit from a solid foundation in the theories and practices of Animation. One of the many strengths of Atelier de Sèvres is its foundation programme for the competitive exams of the top animation schools: Gobelins, Georges Méliès, EMCA Angoulême, and many others – the possibilities are numerous.

In order to maintain its excellent success rate, Atelier de Sèvres has developed mock exams (written and oral) in exam conditions so that students are well equipped for these challenging tests.

In 2018, 15 of the 28 students accepted at Gobelins came from Atelier de Sèvres. And, at EMCA Angoulême, 20 out of the 47 students accepted were from the Animation Foundation at Atelier de Sèvres.

In addition to this intensive preparation, our students put together a portfolio during their Animation Foundation year. This valuable tool is created with the help of the teaching staff at Atelier de Sèvres and developed throughout the year. Students will then present this portfolio at the entrance exams for the top Animation schools.

"What's great is that there are many different parts to the year. Firstly we learn the basics of drawing and history of art. Then we start to prepare our portfolio. Each student has a teacher who guides them in the development of their personal work on the themes that we choose." —Christine, Atelier de Sèvres alumnus
