Animation Foundation: how to successfully complete the year

Successfully completing the Animation Foundation year requires total commitment from students.

In addition to a busy timetable, creating their portfolio and training for the entrance exams for the top Animation schools, students must also commit to their personal development.

Motivation, diligence and open-mindedness are keywords at Atelier de Sèvres. So how do you successfully complete the Animation Foundation year? Michaël Bataille, animation techniques teacher, explains.

Having artistic flair

To join the Animation Foundation at Atelier de Sèvres, above all, you need to be motivated. What happens if you have no experience in the arts but you would like to start? No problem, because, above all else, we place value in candidates’ curiosity and open-mindedness.

As Michaël Bataille at Atelier de Sèvres says, "Drawing is not a gift; it is learned." The most important thing is to have creative flair and to capitalise on it by working hard.

Our goal is to give you the tools to enable you to express your artistic flair. Drawing, as well as Animation techniques and Art History, are among the subjects taught at Atelier de Sèvres. The first months of the school year are dedicated to learning theoretical and practical artistic fundamentals.

On the Animation Foundation, students also practice their art in an intensive manner. As a result, they are continually and exponentially evolving and growing thanks to workshops and other conferences organised at Atelier de Sèvres throughout the year.

Show that you are hardworking and motivated

Being involved in different subjects and artistic practices is paramount at Atelier de Sèvres. Each Animation Foundation student attends around 30 hours of classes per week, in addition to workshops, meetings with Animation professionals, working on their portfolio and, of course, personal involvement that requires visiting museums, exhibitions, etc.

This diligence is essential in order to develop animation skills and grow your creativity.

The key to succeeding in the Animation Foundation year at Atelier de Sèvres, according to Michaël Bataille, is: "To grow, to be curious, and not remain stuck in a single universe or style, to go outside of the school, see exhibitions, go to the cinema, be informed, show your open-mindedness and apply the teaching learned in the classroom to nourish your personal style and create your own visual language."

It is worth noting that a certain amount of eclecticism and an ability to explore different methods and artistic worlds are qualities that are sought after by animation schools and that you are encouraged to develop at Atelier de Sèvres. At the entrance exams, you will have the opportunity to present your own work and to highlight its diversity.

Being involved in projects at Atelier de Sèvres is also very important. The Animation Foundation year enables you to develop skills in Animation and to pass the entrance exams for the major schools, but it also represents an opportunity to create links with the other students on the Animation Foundation course, the teachers and alumni.

If you would like to try to pass the entrance exams to the major animation schools, we invite you to come and visit us during the Atelier de Sèvres open days or to contact us by phone.

Admissions to the Animation Foundation are via individual interviews with the Atelier de Sèvres teaching staff.
